Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Education is a fundamental human right, yet gender inequality in education persists in many parts of Nigeria, including Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. Cultural, economic, and systemic barriers prevent girls from accessing quality education. Public Relations (PR) plays a pivotal role in addressing these issues by advocating for gender equity, mobilizing community support, and influencing policy changes.

Through PR strategies such as community engagement, media advocacy, and partnerships with local stakeholders, societal attitudes towards girls’ education can be transformed. Studies from 2023 highlight the effectiveness of PR in promoting gender equity in education (Eze & Musa, 2023). This research explores how PR can enhance gender equality in education within Jalingo LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Gender disparities in education persist in Jalingo LGA due to cultural biases, economic challenges, and inadequate awareness. While PR has the potential to address these barriers, its role in promoting gender equality in education has not been fully explored in the region. This study investigates how PR can drive equitable access to education.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify PR strategies promoting gender equality in education in Jalingo LGA.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these strategies on public attitudes towards girls’ education.
  3. To recommend improvements for PR campaigns targeting gender equity in education.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What PR strategies are used to promote gender equality in education in Jalingo LGA?
  2. How effective are these strategies in influencing public attitudes towards girls’ education?
  3. What improvements can enhance PR campaigns for gender equality in education?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H1: PR campaigns significantly improve public support for girls’ education.
  2. H2: Cultural resistance undermines the effectiveness of PR efforts in promoting gender equality.
  3. H3: Community-based PR campaigns are more impactful in fostering gender equity in education.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study contributes to understanding the role of PR in addressing gender disparities in education. Its findings will benefit advocacy groups, educators, and policymakers aiming to achieve inclusive education in Jalingo LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to PR strategies for promoting gender equality in education within Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. It excludes other regions and non-PR interventions.
